Prié Blanc

The Prié blanc is the only white-berried variety native to the Aosta Valley.

The Prié blanc is the only white-berried variety native to the Aosta Valley.

It has the specialty of being ungrafted, i.e. not grafted on American vines.  This is cultivated according to tradition on low pergolas, exclusively between 900 and 1200 meters in the upper Valdigne, in the collection of municipalities of La Salle and Morgex. This specialty has made it immune from attacks by phylloxera. It is considered the top variety in Europe.

In the rest of the Valley, it is not unusual to still find former Prié pergolas near old rural homes.

It is used alone in the production of the Aosta Valley Blanc de Morgex et de la Salle. The mature grapes of the Prié create a wine of a soft straw yellow color with greenish reflections, and it is consumed young. Suited as an aperitif, it matches well with delicate antipastos and mountain trout.

This wine is produced both in the firm version and made sparkling with the classic method, also with the same grape variety an "iced" version is produced with iced grapes of (ultra) late-harvest, gathered at the end of December with temperatures to eighteen below zero (Celcius).
